So what is RaceRoom Racing Experience?
RaceRoom, is a free to play simulator, which is among the first to offer a realistic racing experience to players.
The first thing i noticed in SimBin Studios’s new installment was the amazing, amazing engine sounds which are very unique and distinct among the different vehicles. These sound simply amazing and so close to the real thing, I kept doing laps and laps just because i was that immersed in that experience. These sounds don’t stand alone, because you will also be presented with some very decent graphics and detailed models for a free to play game!
Now of course, the newcomer has to first create an account and we do only get 3 free cars and 2 tracks in this before we have to put some of our cash into buying some more content for the game. I know they have to make a living and i actually didn’t find the content very expensive, in comparison with the monstrous DLC prices we have out there today with triple A franchises. I think that the targeted audience of mature racing fans won’t be very troubled by this since the game play and car handling is simply done so well!
There is currently a wide variety of classes, which isn’t great, but doesn’t lack either. I would’ve enjoyed to see some open wheel classes in there, or may bee some old classic DTM or Australian v8 touring classes. Hell, why not go crazy and even give NASCAR a chance?
The last one would be currently hard to get too now, because unfornately , in this version we only have available, of the three Single-player modes they have planed, Track Test (Time Trial). The Multiplayer aspect of the game is sadly also not available, and this was also a major let down for me, as i was hoping to race against either real or AI opponents on these tracks and really get the best of the handling experience.
This was really sad because you get that control and grip feeling, and you can notice the subtle changes in the traction in the different corners, as you and your tires fight to keep you in the road while you push for a faster time in the available time-attack competitions which are shown online, which again, suffer for the lack of variety other than car classes.
This is where i saw one of the game highlights, which is it’s dynamic and very complete racing line which tells you not only the usual “speed here, break there” but also gear changes, braking and speeding points that depict where you should actually hit the brakes or the gas and which are actually signaled with icons, which makes these all the more visible and easy to follow.
Now this feature and another mode in the game called Apex Hunt, which is a little bonus mode designed just for this, helped me a lot to master the different tracks and corners, and i actually had fun trying to beat other times and getting that feeling that i was actually learning as a race driver.
My final opinion is:
RaceRoom Racing Experience is a very solid simulator which is affordable and hits the spot in actually simulating a Race Car. Tough more casual players won’t be as attracted to this title given the difficulty and the lack of actual car to car racing, fans of realism and driving will probably enjoy it. This game’s value will be really better when the rest of it’s planned content is finished and i cannot wait until then, but for now, we have an interesting experience that leaves us wanting for just a bit more…
