“Peek-a-boo, I see you. You can’t see me, but I see you and my spotter can too. I pull the trigger, the bullet flies. Commies watch as one of their own dies.”
- Unknown Sniper
Sniper. A word used by many, especially gamers, but most people don’t really know how it is to be in real life they think it’s all about quick scoping and jumping around doing no scopes like many other games but Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 is not that game by far. Although the game really brings back memories about Call of Duty 4 both in the loading menus which are mission briefings before the missions (which is exactly like Call of Duty 4) and in the movement and combat (although with some sniping mechanics attached to it) the game is heavily influenced by Call of Duty even in the bad things.
City Interactive brings us Sniper Ghost Warrior 2, powered by the Cry Engine 3 we go deep into sniping missions with our main character, the story is your typical shooter of Tuesday (again Russians are the enemy), there’s really not much to add to it really you’re basically a sniper called Cole Anderson and the game explains you his story via flashbacks as you move on with the story, the dialogues are “rubbish” attempting to be a “real “military dialogue when it’s nothing more than a movie like attempt to be realistic, the voice acting … don’t really make me go there.
This is not a “PURE” Sniping game, the closest you get is the Arcade feeling attached to it unlike other sniper games that try to get pretty serious about it. If you ignore the Sniping mechanics you have, it quickly becomes your Call of Duty 4 Chernobyl mission right here where you follow your partner a Spotter and he tells you what to do….your typical “FPS Following”, although the game happens in a swamp and “sometimes” the story either takes you to a small mission in the mountains or in the city, it really doesn’t bring the feeling of a “real” sniping game like back in the days. The saving and checkpoint system doesn’t help neither, when you die you go back like half of the mission so you’re going to go through those boring parts all over again.
The most impressive feature this game has to offer is Stealth. In Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 you have to take stealth seriously, if you end up shooting a soldier next to his comrade EVERYONE in that camp is immediately pointing his gun towards you which is a messy situation when you can only rely on your Sniper Rifle, you will be spending huge amounts of time PRONING moving from place to place or waiting for patrols to move on. The game has a Multiplayer mode and in terms of game play it’s slow, everyone is at their usual spots and you have to remember to check them or you get sniped, the community is rapidly dying and sometimes it’s complicated to find a match, you may have the luck to see 3 or 4 “servers” (The server browser is nothing more than a User hosting list) at prime time.
As I stated above Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 is powered by the Cry Engine 3 the same engine that powers Crysis 2 and Crysis 3, graphically the game is a mess it doesn’t really use the full potential of Cry Engine 3, the textures are horrible they are low resolution and when you try to take a better look the only thing you see is pixels, the water looks awful to a level where i can compare to the water of World of Warcraft.
The PC version does not support DirectX11 at launch although it was mentioned that it would be added in “later”, the game has huge glitches and bugs especially if you’re in the prone position you will end up in sticky situations like having to stand up because of a small rock, there’s one annoying bug in the first mission where you get a blue pixelated rectangle right in the middle of your screen. It’s really a shame that the game has the Cry Engine 3 name attached to it because the only thing that is reminiscent of Cry Engine 3 is the Blur effect, nothing shown in Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 is going to make you “WOW!”.
The sounds are recycled mostly from the first game, you can hear sounds that you already heard already a million times in Sniper Ghost Warrior, the weapon sounds are not that good, and the ambient sounds are almost nonexistent, the menu theme reminds me of snipers and swamps something that the game is focused on.
So what’s in store for Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 in the near Future?
City Interactive has plans to release a free multiplayer DLC pack and a patch Direct X 11 support after the release; we hope with the DX11 the graphics are fixed especially the textures and the water.
Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 could’ve been a great sniping game but even after all the delays that the game suffered since the last year it’s nothing more than your typical shooter with some Sniping mechanics attached to it .
