The Walking Dead.
Games, a comic, a TV series…
Robert Kirkman did a remarkable job writing the comic that gave birth to the famous TV series (Which I and Frank have been following since it started) and to the amazing game from Telltale; and being a fan of the Zombie genre, I was curious to see what was Activison and Terminal Reality’s approach to this concept.
Starting from the beginning of the game you’re put in the character of Deryl’s dad on a hunting trip. However, the gameplay and controls soon start ruining the fun as there is no intro, you just “spawn” with no control instructions.
But if you are an FPS player, you soon realize the control. However, for example, if you want to open the inventory you have to consult the options.
You change characters to your main one, Daryl (makes me believe they chose him to compensate for the rest of the game), which you’ll be playing for the rest of the game.
The good about this game is that it has the survival and scavenge component, you get the limited choice of your next destination but you control the roads you take, either it being the highways or the side roads for extra resource opportunities. This feature however, is the only good thing you’ll find in gameplay. The controls are really buggy and not easy to use; the fighting mechanic gets old after you kill 3 or 4 walkers because of the repetitive animations and the time it takes to perform a hit. There are times where you do get the feeling your cornered and that it’s game over for you, but running usually fixes this.
The story is overly repetitive too and there’s not much holding you to play the game, and if you’re playing to see the ending, don’t. You’ll have a big letdown since the end looks like the developers suddenly ran out of money and had to cut it there.
The graphics aren’t new, there’s nothing interesting here. The zombies however do look quite realistic but many faces look the same throughout a level
This game can’t blend a FPS with story, and because of this it fails in these two levels. Parts of the game look like the devs only worked on this for two weeks as there is almost no polishing.
You should go play Left 4 Dead if you want a zombie shooter, or Telltale’s game if you want a story driven one.
